Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection screenings

Medicare covers HBV screenings only if your doctor orders it and you meet one of these conditions:

  • You’re at high risk for HBV infection.
  • You’re pregnant.

You pay nothing for the screening if your doctor or other health care provider accepts assignment .

Things to know

Medicare covers these screenings once a year if you’re at continued high risk and don’t get a Hepatitis B shot.

If you’re pregnant, Medicare covers these screenings:

  • At the first prenatal visit. 
  • At the time of delivery if you have new or continued risk factors.
  • At the first prenatal visit for future pregnancies, even if you previously got the Hepatitis B shot or had negative HBV screening results.
